The value of APIs

it matters a lot less to us that you use our web site than that you use our API

I wonder how many Web 2.0 outfits understand the strength of that statement. The power of APIs may be where the real value of a lot of Web 2.0 efforts is really unveiled. Those APIs are actually what is currently most threatening to incumbents in just about any industry as they undermine the proprietary nature of data lock-in.
